The boots have spent months in a cupboard and their uppers still look tidy. That impression is not enough for the next day hike. Inspect the pair several days ahead rather than only while leaving home. You then have time for professional assessment or a different footwear decision if something looks wrong.
Examine three areas in turn
Start underneath. Remove loose soil according to the care instructions and notice where the tread remains defined. Then follow the entire sole edge. Are there new gaps, openings or components visibly separating? Finally, compare left and right under similar light.
Include the intermediate layer between upper and outsole wherever it is visible. LOWA explains that PU-based cushioning materials can become brittle through aging, even without frequent use. Clean footwear with little tread wear is therefore not automatically free from material aging.
Avoid probing for hidden weaknesses with sharp tools or pulling hard on an already loose edge. A visual inspection should identify condition, rather than turn damaged footwear into an improvised stress test. Photograph anything unusual clearly, alongside a picture showing the whole shoe.
Resolve concerns before walking
Crumbling material, new cracks and visible separation deserve advice. Do not patch them shortly before departure with arbitrary household adhesive. That neither establishes the extent of the damage nor proves the pair is suitable for hiking again.
Prepare the model name, approximate purchase date, usage history and photographs for an enquiry. Manufacturer pages may contain different inspection recommendations, so do not select the most generous interval. Use current guidance for the particular model and its real condition. A visible change should not wait for an anniversary.
If an assessment cannot happen in time, choose another suitable checked pair or postpone that route. Inspection serves little purpose if its findings are never allowed to influence the plan.
Remain attentive after checking
An unremarkable exterior does not promise unlimited remaining life. With older footwear, a short route that is easy to end can provide further observations before a longer outing. It does not replace any required professional inspection.
After repair, record what was actually renewed. A new outsole and replacement of the complete sole construction are different services. This information helps you remember the components that remain when you next inspect the footwear.
